Just like most other lightbulbs, vehicle headlights burn out occasionally. Standard headlights usually last about five years, which means most vehicles will need a replacement at some point. But how can you tell when your vehicle needs new headlights from your local used car dealer? There are several warning signs you can watch for.

Your Lights Are Unresponsive

If your lights refuse to come on, your bulbs may have burned out, or you may have a wiring issue. It’s not safe to drive without headlights, so unresponsive lights are a sign that your vehicle needs immediate service attention. One of our factory-trained technicians can check out your headlights and perform the appropriate repair.

If you need new lights, it’s smart to have both lights replaced at the same time. The lights on your vehicle are usually about the same age, so if one has failed, the other is probably not far behind. Having both replaced can save you a trip back to our service department when the other light goes out.

You Frequently Need To Replace Your Bulbs

If your headlights need to be replaced regularly, or more than every few years, there may be damaged sockets or loose connections that need to be repaired. The problem may not have to do with the bulbs themselves, but with the infrastructure that supports the bulbs. We can inspect your lights and determine the problem.

You See Damage to the Headlight Lens

Your headlights are protected by clear plastic lenses that are designed to be long-lasting but are still susceptible to damage. Collisions, road debris, and wear and tear can cause cracks in the lenses, allowing moisture into the lights and diminishing their brightness and clarity. If you see visible signs of damage to the lenses on your light, you may need a new pair of lights.

Your Lights Are Dim or Discolored

Do your lights seem a little dimmer than before, or have they taken on a yellowish appearance? These may be signs that you need a new set of lights, but it could also be a sign that the lenses on your current lights simply need a good scrub.

Dirt and grime can build up on the lenses, affecting the brightness and color of your lights. Lenses that are damaged are especially vulnerable to the accumulation of debris.  Our service department can remove your lenses for cleaning, and replace your lights if necessary.
Working lights are essential to the safe operation of your vehicle, so be alert to any signs that they may be failing. And when it’s time to schedule your next service appointment or order the headlights you need, be sure to call Duncan Suzuki.
